Brackley Town Hall wins again!
Brackley Town Hall's Winning Windows!
Last night, in the beautiful surroundings of Holdenby House, the Northamptonshire Heritage Awards took place. There were 10 awards to be presented covering all aspects of life in the county's museums, heritage sites and history societies. John Griff from BBC Radio Northampton compered the evening and the Heritage Forum's Patron Earl Spencer, also in attendance, gave a speech about how important the county's heritage is.
Brackley Town Hall was praised each time it was mentioned by the judges for its complex activities and best practice in many areas. It was nominated for 4 awards in total: Best Volunteer Project, Best Exhibition, Best Event and Best Special Project. It was a very tense moment as we waited for the announcements of each category as all were filled with very worthy winners from across our county, but we were rewarded with Overall Winner of the Best Special Project Award for the Stained Glass Window Project!
Johnathan Platt, Head of Investment for England; Midlands & East from the National Lottery Heritage Fund was at the ceremony to present the Best Special Project Award and he was really pleased that it was a National Lottery Heritage Funded project that had won the award.
Brackley Town Hall historically had stained glass windows and so as part of the restoration, the team set about bringing stained glass back to the building in a way that reflects the Brackley of the 21st Century. A competition was opened and many Brackley residents submitted their designs and 26 winning windows were finally chosen. Each of the 26 roundels were created by Rachel Aldridge from Aldridge Glass Northamptonshire. The winning window designs vary from Brackley Castle to The Brackley Morris Men and a child feeding the ducks. The youngest winner was 6 and the oldest was 87.
Brackley's Town Clerk, Alison Moses said 'We are all so proud of the Town Hall and the Stained Glass windows are the jewel in the crown. They really make the building all about Brackley.'
Thank you to everyone who entered the competition – this award is dedicated to you!
