Mito Awareness Week - Egerton Light Up Green

Posted in Residents' Information

14–20 September is Global Mitochondrial Disease Awareness Week. Mitochondrial disease is the most common inherited neurometabolic disorder of childhood. It is incurable and life limiting.

Mitochondria are the “powerhouses” of our cells, turning the food we eat into the energy we need to grow and function. When the genetic code for our mitochondria is disrupted, they cannot work properly. This leads to symptoms that may affect any part of the body. Organs that need the most energy, such as the brain, heart and muscles, are particularly vulnerable. The disease can appear at any age.

At least four families in Brackley, and others across Northamptonshire, are affected or currently under investigation.

Each September, landmarks across the world light up green to raise awareness. Last year Battersea Power Station, Blackpool Tower, Leeds Castle and the Mersey Gateway Bridge all went #MitoAware. This year, our very own Egerton Hall has joined them.

You can show your support by lighting up green on Saturday 20 September. To find out more, visit thelilyfoundation.org.uk or mitochondrialdiseaseweek.org.
