Brackley European Association – Town Twinning

Brackley Town has been twinning with Pavillons-sous-Bois (a suburb of Paris) since 1972. The Town Council celebrated the 40th anniversary with a weekend of activities with visiting French guests in May 2012. As always they stayed with families in and around Brackley for their weekend visit.

Three years later, in 1975, a similar arrangement was established by the Town Council with the German town of Montabaur. Their 40th anniversary was organised by Brackley European Association and celebrated in September 2015 in Brackley. Visits were arranged to the Lord Leycester Hospital in Warwick, the Hill Close Gardens and a tour of the Mercedes Petronas facility in Brackley along with a guided history walk along Brackley's High Street and Market Place. A Civic luncheon was hosted by the Town Mayor in the Town Hall, attended by the Lord-Lieutenant for Northamptonshire, the High Sheriff, a number of Brackley Town Councillors, Mayor of Montabaur and members of the Brackley European Association with their guests from the Montabaur twinning association. Gifts were exchanged between the two Mayors and the original charter was renewed and signed by them.

The Brackley European Association is a lively and friendly group of volunteers who take on the responsibility of sustaining the town's twinning activities on behalf of Brackley Town Council. They operate on a self-funding basis, paying their own travelling expenses and raising funds to entertain our twinning colleagues when they visit Brackley. All Brackley residents and those from neighbouring villages are eligible to join. Monthly meetings are held on the last Thursday of each month.

Recent Meetings, Events

On the evening of 22nd September, members of the Brackley European Association welcomed their German twinning visitors from the lovely medieval town of Montabaur. They had had a long and tiring coach journey but were revived in the Old Fire Station with an English cream tea and a warm welcome from our Mayor Don Thompson. On Saturday morning, they were further invigorated by a most interesting tour of Delapre Abbey and a walk round the grounds.

Sunday was left for individual families to organise. A number of people visited Oxford and invited our visitors to enjoy looking round some of the colleges and sampling some English beer at an ancient hostelry.

And were we lucky with the weather! We had sunshine for our trips out and no rain at all. We waved our visitors a fond farewell in the Market Square on Monday morning. It had been a very good weekend – good company, good food, good beer and good cheer and we look forward to September 2018 when we shall be enjoying the same warm welcome when we visit Montabaur. And we'd love you to join us. The Association is open to all residents in Brackley and its surrounding district; we normally meet on the last Thursday of every month in the Old Fire Station at 8.0pm. At our next meeting, on 30th November we are holding a wine tasting. The theme will be S.E. Australian wines and we will have both whites and reds approx. 8-10 in total to tantalise our taste buds. Non members are very welcome but we do need to know if you are coming so that we can organise the catering.

Please ring Graham Archdale on 01280 704018 by Monday 27th November to book your place. Tickets cost £9 per head and we raise glasses at 8 pm. It'll be a great evening; see you there.
